Abstract:
Artificial pollinatio n experiment s rev ealed that the female fertility of N J89- 1 w asno rmal, then, N J89- 1 w as a male- sterile female- fertile muta nt. Pollen g erminationex periments show ed that the male steri li ty o f N J89- 1 w as pret ty high and stable wi th apollen g ermination percentage less than 0. 75% . Genetic data led to the conclusion thatthe male steri li ty of N J89- 1 was co nt rolled by a sing le recessiv e nuclear g ene. Alleli smtests indicated that the male sterile g ene of N J89- 1 w as no n- al lelic to the male sterileg enes of ms1, ms2, ms3, ms4 and ms5. The cy tomorpho logical observa tions o n antherand po llen dev elopment show ed that N J89- 1 was di fferent f rom ms1~ ms6 mutants inmany aspect s such as abor tion stag e, meiosis, tet rad fo rmation, pollen w all and antherw all etc. N J89- 1 display ed similar meio tic abnormalities o f asy napsis o r desynapsis tothose o f st2~ st5 mutants, but dif fered f rom st2~ st5 mutants in female fer tili ty, namely, the female of N J89- 1 w as normal , while those of st2~ st5 muta nt s w ere st ronglyimpai red. Therefore, N J89- 1 w as a new male sterile mutant. The male sterile g enesymbol of N J89- 1 w as proposed to be ms7.
